Political ad campaigns after the elections

by Noel Wiggins

I had a thought today that I realized would be a great entry for the blog.

Before I go on I think it would be fair to say I am not overly concerned with politics and issues related to them so I hope this doesn’t inpire a political debate, because I will surely loose. But here is the idea. I was watching my favorite “boring show” Sunday Morning and while we where updating our coffee I noticed a political ad for a Governor David Paterson election ad. I was moved by its sincerity and felt it was an effective ad, But what I didn’t understand was was this ad for re-election or was it a random public service type of ad.

I was later disappointed by seeing another ad where he clearly claimed “re-elect me”. But this got me thinking about the idea of political folks, paying for some advertising “after” the election. For example Obama’s campaigns where impressive to me last election, while “the other guy” was bashing and slinging mud, Obama’s was down to earth and effectively portrayed a genuine  candidate that the country could feel proud to have as a leader.

Now that he’s in office, we don’t see the ads anymore, and won’t until it’s time for “re-election”. My wife claimed well thats what the public addresses are for. Which I quickly added oh yeah we usually turn the tv off, or find a movie to watch. I don’t think I am alone in that reaction, I am sure there are other folks out there that get bored by these addresses and tune em out.

All I am suggesting is create a campaign of short 30 second snippets with the same effective formula that got him in office, to help ensure the general public, it doesn’t have to be as often as an election campaign is, but create a regular campaign schedule helping streamline current plans and theores and in a tone that can reassure the public.

If you think about it political campaigns is not un-like any other major brand out there, could you imaging a Mc Donalds or Walmart campaign running every five minutes for a few months and then none for 3 years?

So imagine if these polical figures did these types of campaigns throughout the term?

PLease tell me what you think.
