3 to 8 Seconds to Tell Your Story

by Noel Wiggins

I have been designing websites for over 10 years now, and I feel as though I have walked through practically every path you can go through to designing a website, but yet I still seem to be finding new things to try and think about in making website designs effective. My latest “tangent” is this idea of telling your story within 3 to 8 seconds. Thats all the time you have before the new “unique” visitor will hit the back button to never return again. (Don’t forget about fetchback for combatting this side effect of website design.)

But if you want to try and convert this casual traffic into a more lasting visitor then lets make sure you get your point across within- 3 to 8 seconds. I believe that when building a new website for a client we all agree that we want it to be “simple” but as soon as we get into it then it starts to get more and more “complicated”. Because designing websites is “Dynamic” and not permanent like a printed marketing piece. Because website design is dynamic we tend to keep adding more and more content thinking it will help sell our product or service.

What if, we took the direction of designing the home page or the landing page the same way we would design a “Billboard”, over simplifying your message and reducing the call to action to being simply visit the next page, which would have more information.

If done right we will keep the visitor just long enough for them to learn what we do and where they could go if they ever need what we do.

Now how to convince the next client to try this with their website design…
